The McKinney City Council held a work session on September 16, 2025, at 3 PM, focusing on community safety and recognition of exemplary service within the McKinney Police Department.
The session began with Police Chief Ellenberg addressing the council and highlighting the commendable work of the department. He shared two significant stories that exemplified the department's motto: "do the right thing, do the best you can do, and treat others the way you'd want to be treated."
The first story featured Sergeant Tina Mallinckfant, who led a year-long investigation into a complex financial abuse scheme targeting elderly residents. Her efforts uncovered a fraudulent operation that involved charging victims exorbitant prices for security systems and taking out loans in their names. This investigation not only resulted in the arrest of three suspects but also raised awareness about the scam affecting numerous victims across Texas. Chief Ellenberg presented Sergeant Mallinckfant with the chief's challenge coin in recognition of her dedication and commitment to justice.
The second story highlighted Officer Demond Barnett, who, along with his field training officer, Jackson Watts, responded to a call about a four-year-old child found alone in a park. Officer Barnett, drawing from his personal experience as a parent of a child with autism, was able to connect with the nonverbal child and provide comfort during a distressing situation. Dispatch supervisor Caitlin Geismond also played a crucial role by bringing a spare diaper and staying with the child until Child Protective Services arrived. Both Officer Barnett and Geismond received the chief's challenge coin for their compassion and professionalism.
Following the recognition segment, the council opened the floor for public comments on agenda items, although no audience members chose to speak. The meeting then transitioned to discussions regarding the agenda for the upcoming city council meeting.
Overall, the work session underscored the McKinney Police Department's commitment to community service and highlighted the importance of empathy and professionalism in law enforcement. The council's recognition of these officers serves as a reminder of the positive impact that dedicated public service can have on the community.
