In a recent meeting of the Citizens' Independent Transportation Trust, a significant resolution was passed, marking a step forward in enhancing Miami-Dade County's transportation infrastructure. The board approved a contract for the Metro Fire Panel Upgrade project, awarding Kaseko Electrical Contractors Inc. a contract valued at $3,054,952.40. This amount includes a construction contingency allowance of $262,395 and an additional $168,607 for spare parts. The funding for this project will come from the People's Transportation Plan bond program, which aims to improve public transit safety and reliability.
The project is particularly noteworthy as it involves the replacement of fire panels in 20 out of the 21 stations within the county's transit system. This upgrade is expected to bolster safety measures across the network, ensuring that emergency systems are up to date and effective.
Following the resolution, the meeting transitioned to presentations, with the City of Miami's Director of Resilience and Public Works, Juvenas Santana, providing a quarterly update on ridership. From April to June, the transit system recorded approximately 1.2 million riders, averaging about 391,000 per month. The city continues to operate 13 routes, with adjustments for weekends, and has recently added a new trolley to its fleet, with plans for 11 more on order.
As Miami-Dade County moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on enhancing public transportation and ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its riders. The approval of the fire panel upgrades and the positive ridership trends reflect a commitment to improving the county's transit infrastructure, paving the way for a more efficient and secure transportation system.
