The City of Corona is set to revive its historic road racing tradition with the approval of the Corona 5000, a 5K race scheduled for March 21, 2026. The City Council unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with OC Marathon LLC during their recent meeting, marking a significant step towards enhancing community engagement and promoting local health initiatives.
Community Services Director Donna Fincher presented the proposal, highlighting the event's alignment with the city’s strategic plan to increase large-scale recreational activities. The Corona 5000 aims to celebrate the city’s rich history of road racing, which dates back over a century, while also fostering social and economic benefits for the community. The race will take place on the historic Grand Circle, a nearly perfect three-mile diameter loop, providing a unique venue for participants and spectators alike.
The OC Marathon, known for its successful events that raise funds for local charities, will manage the logistics of the race, including route permits, traffic control, and participant experience. The partnership is expected to draw approximately 2,500 runners and their families, creating a vibrant atmosphere that promotes health and wellness.
In addition to the race, a post-event celebration will be held at the Civic Center, featuring awards, food vendors, and entertainment, further enhancing community spirit. The city is committed to minimizing disruptions during the event, with a detailed traffic management plan in place to ensure safety and accessibility for residents.
As preparations begin, the city will engage with local businesses and residents to ensure a smooth experience for all involved. The Corona 5000 not only aims to introduce a new generation to the city’s racing heritage but also to establish a recurring event that can benefit the community for years to come.
