The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees welcomed its newest member, Dr. Deborah Barnett, during a meeting on September 18, 2025. Dr. Barnett, a proud SIU alumna and first-generation college graduate, brings a wealth of experience to the board, having served as the executive director of SI Now, a regional economic development initiative.

Dr. Barnett holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and has earned both a master's and a doctorate in workforce education and development from SIU. She recently completed an executive leadership program at Harvard University, further enhancing her credentials. Her diverse background as an educator, administrator, entrepreneur, and community leader positions her well to contribute to the board's mission of strengthening business growth and workforce development in Southern Illinois.
