The Fairview City Council meeting on September 17, 2025, focused on community engagement and proposed changes to the Community Engagement Committee (CEC). Recreation Director Cairo introduced new program coordinator Annie, who highlighted the committee's challenges, including low attendance and a lack of quorum at meetings.
The CEC has only met four times this year, with only one meeting being substantive. Currently, the committee consists of four members, two of whom have inconsistent attendance. One member's term is set to expire in 2025, while the other has about a year left. This lack of participation has hindered the committee's effectiveness in decision-making and event planning.
To address these issues, the staff proposed shifting the focus of the CEC towards volunteer recruitment and engagement. Annie's background in volunteer management was noted as a valuable asset in this transition. The aim is to create a more active volunteer base to support community events, allowing staff to make timely decisions and enhance community involvement.
Cairo also discussed the need for improved communication within the city, especially as staff transitions occur. With the upcoming retirement of HR personnel and the restructuring of roles, there is a push to streamline operations and enhance community outreach.
The council was encouraged to consider this proposal and to engage in future discussions about the role and effectiveness of all city committees. A work session is planned for November to further explore these topics and gather input from council members on the direction of community engagement efforts.
