The City of West Allis is set to enhance its traffic management with a new AI-driven system, thanks to a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT). During a recent meeting, officials announced that DOT will cover the installation costs of this innovative technology, which adjusts traffic flow in real-time to alleviate congestion.
"This small traffic AI system will help us manage congestion on the fly," said a city representative. The first five years of maintenance and programming will also be funded by DOT, easing the financial burden on the city. After this initial period, there will be an annual cost, but the upfront investment is a significant win for West Allis.
Lindsay from TACO, the company behind the technology, emphasized the urgency of implementing this system, especially with the upcoming I-94 West Bureau project that will reroute traffic through West Allis. "This is going to increase congestion on Greenfield Avenue, and it's going to have a big impact," she noted, highlighting the need for proactive measures.
The project is expected to begin next month, coinciding with the closure of the Holly Ramps, which will funnel more vehicles onto local roads. The AI system aims to mitigate the expected traffic surge, providing long-term benefits for the community.
As the city prepares for these changes, officials are optimistic that the collaboration with DOT and the introduction of advanced technology will lead to smoother traffic conditions for residents and visitors alike.
