The Los Alamos County Environmental Sustainability Board convened on September 18, 2025, to discuss the findings of an artificial turf feasibility study. The meeting highlighted the increasing demand for high-quality multi-use athletic fields at the North Mesa Sports Complex and Overlook Park, which are struggling to accommodate a growing number of teams and year-round programming.
Project manager Anya Pastushowska introduced the study, emphasizing its focus on sustainability and community engagement. The study aimed to assess existing field conditions, improve safety and playability, and explore options for artificial turf installation. The recommendations include field realignment, synthetic turf options, and site improvements such as accessibility and alternative energy use.
The study involved extensive community input, including five public meetings and surveys that gathered over 200 responses. Feedback indicated a strong desire for improvements in field conditions, with concerns about injuries and maintenance challenges. Community members expressed interest in multi-use fields and amenities like dugouts and restrooms.
While many see artificial turf as a solution to extend playing seasons and enhance safety, concerns were raised about potential drawbacks, including increased competition for field use, heat retention in summer, and environmental impacts. Importantly, the report does not advocate for replacing all natural turf fields, reflecting a community preference to retain a balance between natural and artificial surfaces.
The board is expected to submit comments on the study by October 3, guiding future decisions on athletic facilities in Los Alamos County.
