Sandy's Planning Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing community support for individuals with developmental disabilities by approving a conditional use request for an adult daycare program. The meeting, held on September 18, 2025, focused on the proposal to operate the daycare within a portion of an existing building in the professional office zone.
The initiative, presented by Jane Tofa from Empowering You, aims to provide essential services for individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral needs. Initially, the program plans to serve 2 to 3 clients, with aspirations to expand to 15 or more as demand grows. Transportation for clients will be managed through a dedicated van service, ensuring that individuals are picked up and dropped off without relying on family or friends.
Support for the project has been evident, with positive feedback received from community members, including an email and a phone call expressing approval for the daycare's establishment. The Planning Commission had previously visited the site, which was recently rezoned to accommodate this type of service.
The daycare will be funded through Medicaid waivers, emphasizing a person-centered approach that focuses on helping clients gain independence, develop skills, and connect with the broader Sandy community. This initiative represents a crucial development in local services for individuals with special needs, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and support within the community.
As the program moves forward, it is expected to play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for its participants and fostering a more inclusive environment in Sandy.
