The Derby Planning Commission meeting on September 18, 2025, focused on the city's water supply and the impact of new well installations on local residents. Development Director Dan Esquin addressed concerns regarding the availability of well water and the quality of water that will be provided to residents.
Esquin explained that the city is relocating its water diversion point further away from Bluff, which is intended to reactivate existing wells while ensuring they are not in close proximity to domestic wells. The proposed new wells will be located on Hillside, approximately one mile from Bluff, adhering to spacing requirements set by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Department of Water Resources. This decision aims to mitigate concerns about potential depletion of local water supplies.
The meeting also highlighted the city's ongoing efforts to investigate additional water rights near Haysville, which could further enhance local water availability. Esquin reassured residents that the city’s water rights are capped, meaning they cannot pump more water than they currently do, which is about one billion gallons annually.
Concerns about water quality were also addressed. Esquin noted that the city is investing $20 million in a new water treatment facility that will blend local water with water sourced from Wichita. This facility will utilize advanced filtration processes to ensure that the water quality meets or exceeds current standards, alleviating past issues with hard water.
Residents expressed their worries about the potential impact on their properties and the local aquifer. Esquin responded that studies indicate minimal impact on the water table, emphasizing that the aquifer is a fast-moving system that typically recharges after dry spells.
The meeting concluded with Esquin offering to meet with residents to discuss their concerns further, reinforcing the city’s commitment to transparency and community engagement regarding water supply issues.
