Buffalo Public Schools is making strides in literacy and mathematics, as highlighted in the recent Board Meeting on September 17, 2025. The district reported significant progress in literacy for economically disadvantaged third graders, surpassing their proficiency goal. Last year, these students achieved a remarkable 26.9% proficiency, exceeding the target of 19.3% set for 2025. This success is attributed to the implementation of the MyView literacy program and enhanced teacher training in vocabulary development.
However, the news was not as positive for sixth-grade mathematics. The district aimed for a proficiency increase from 23.5% to 26% but fell short, with only 20.9% of students meeting the standard. Despite this setback, officials noted that this group had improved from 14.3% proficiency as fifth graders, indicating progress over time. The Reveal Math program, introduced last year, is still in its early stages, and the district is committed to providing ongoing professional development to support teachers in its implementation.
In response to concerns about student support, the district has established 60-minute core math instruction blocks and 30-minute response to intervention (RTI) sessions for grades K-6. This structure aims to provide targeted assistance to students struggling with math skills. Additionally, the introduction of the ALEKS online intervention program for grades K-2 is expected to enhance support for younger students.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among teachers, administrators, and the community to achieve educational goals. As the district continues to refine its strategies and programs, officials remain focused on improving student outcomes in both literacy and mathematics. The commitment to monitoring progress and adapting approaches will be crucial as Buffalo Public Schools strives to elevate proficiency levels across the board.
