The Edmond City Council convened on September 22, 2025, to address several key issues impacting the community, including sales tax renewals, infrastructure improvements, and appointments.
The meeting began with a discussion on the upcoming sales tax renewal election scheduled for November 18. Voters will decide on the renewal of two existing taxes: Proposition 1, a 1¢ general fund sales tax first approved in 1977, which supports daily city operations across 32 divisions, primarily funding police and fire services; and Proposition 2, a half-cent Capital Improvement Project (CIP) tax last renewed in 2016, dedicated to road improvements and traffic flow. Importantly, these renewals will not increase the current sales tax rate of 8.25%.
Next, the council reviewed ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly a significant $9.9 million upgrade at the busy intersection of Danforth and Kelly, which handles approximately 50,000 vehicles daily. This project, partially funded by federal resources, aims to enhance traffic flow and safety through the addition of dual left turn lanes, right turn lanes, raised medians, ADA-compliant sidewalks, and a new traffic signal. The city's contribution to this project is about $2.3 million, and it is expected to take around 210 days to complete, weather permitting. The council acknowledged the disruptions caused by construction and requested patience from residents and businesses in the area.
Following infrastructure discussions, the council moved on to appointments and reappointments, approving six positions unanimously with a 5-0 vote.
The meeting concluded with a transition to the Edmond Public Works Authority meeting, where additional consent items were addressed. Notably, the council discussed a proposal from the director of KickingBird Golf regarding the expansion of the golf course parking lot and refurbishment of aging water wells, highlighting the ongoing need for operational improvements at the facility.
Overall, the meeting underscored the city's commitment to maintaining essential services and infrastructure while preparing for upcoming community decisions regarding tax renewals.
