The Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission has taken a significant step towards residential development by approving a vacation of section line easements within the proposed West Coho Subdivision. During the meeting held on September 22, 2025, the commission unanimously voted to vacate all section line easements as part of the subdivision process, which aims to facilitate the development of new residential properties.
The proposal includes the dedication of right-of-way totaling 100 feet in width along key areas of the subdivision, specifically along Goofy Street and Shaw Airstrip Avenue. The KPB addressing officer has requested a new street name for Shaw Airstrip Avenue, which will run north-south along the west side of the plat. This new naming is part of the ongoing efforts to ensure proper infrastructure and accessibility in the area.
The vacation of the easements is set to be reviewed by the KPB Assembly at their upcoming meeting on October 14, 2025. If approved, the vacation will be finalized through the recording of the Section Line Easement Vacation Exhibit document, which is currently under review by the State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources for filing purposes.
The commission's decision reflects a commitment to advancing residential development in the borough, with the staff recommending approval based on the merits of public necessity. The unanimous vote indicates strong support for the project, which is expected to enhance the community's housing options. As the process moves forward, the Planning Commission and the KPB Assembly will continue to play crucial roles in shaping the future of the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
