The Yankton City Commission has approved a new rate structure for the Summit Activity Center, set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This decision comes after a thorough review of attendance and membership trends, which have shown significant increases over the past two years. Todd, a city representative, highlighted that the last rate adjustment was made in 2024, and with rising operational costs, a new adjustment is necessary to maintain the facility's services.
The proposed rates will remain competitive, falling below those of local gyms like Anytime Fitness and Great Life. The commission emphasized that this adjustment is a standard business practice aimed at ensuring the center can continue to provide quality services to the community. Members will have the opportunity to purchase annual memberships at the current 2025 rates before the new rates take effect, allowing them to save money while securing access to the facility.
Commissioner comments praised the center's ongoing improvements and the efforts of city staff, noting that attendance reached 90,000 last year and is on track to surpass that this year. The commission also discussed the potential for a senior citizen discount, but ultimately decided to maintain the current rate structure to keep it simple and accessible for all.
In addition to the Summit Activity Center, the commission also reviewed rates for the Heuther Family Aquatic Center, which also saw increased attendance and revenue this past year. The aquatic center plans to adjust its pricing to reflect rising costs while continuing to offer affordable options for families, including discounted evening rates and partnerships with local organizations to provide access to youth.
The commission's decisions reflect a commitment to maintaining affordable and accessible recreational facilities for the Yankton community, ensuring that residents can enjoy quality fitness and aquatic services.
