The New Berlin School District held its Annual Meeting and Budget Hearing on September 22, 2025, highlighting significant achievements and discussing the district's financial outlook. Superintendent Joe Garza opened the meeting by showcasing the district's accomplishments over the past year, emphasizing its status as one of only ten K-12 public school districts in Wisconsin to exceed state expectations. Both high schools in the district were ranked in the top 20 by U.S. News and World Report, placing them in the top 5.5% nationally.
Garza noted the district's strong staff retention rate of 95%, which he attributed to the quality of educators, including four Herb Kohl nominees and the state Global Educator of the Year, Jessica Santiago. The meeting also celebrated student achievements, such as the New Berlin West Academic Decathlon team winning the state championship and individual accolades in spelling and athletics.
In terms of safety, the district has enhanced security measures across its schools, including updates to alert systems and a transition from a fob system to an ID system for access. The Education Foundation of New Berlin contributed significantly, granting over $17,000 in scholarships and more than $25,000 in teacher grants, alongside successful fundraising efforts.
Chief Financial Officer Patrick Miller presented the budget, noting the district's financial stability and a projected decline in debt within the operating budget. He indicated that the district is five years away from significant debt reduction, providing a positive outlook for future financial health.
The meeting concluded with a call for public comments, allowing community members to engage with the district's plans and financial strategies. Overall, the meeting underscored the New Berlin School District's commitment to academic excellence and financial responsibility.
