Huerfano County officials have approved significant updates to the local fire code, raising fines for violations in a move aimed at enhancing community safety. During the recent Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting, the board voted to increase the fine for a first violation from $50 to $250 and for a second violation from $250 to $500. This decision reflects a commitment to stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations.
Concerns were raised about the financial burden these fines may impose on residents. In response, it was clarified that individuals unable to pay the fines can present their situation to a judge, who has the discretion to adjust penalties based on individual circumstances.
The board's motion to approve these updates passed unanimously, with plans to publish the changes in local newspapers. A final adoption of the updated ordinance is expected in approximately three weeks.
In addition to the fire code updates, the commissioners designated representatives for the Colorado Counties, Inc. (CCI) legislative committee. Chairman Spoerler will serve as the primary designee, with Commissioner Chamberlain as the alternate. This designation is crucial for ensuring Huerfano County's interests are represented in legislative discussions.
These decisions underscore the county's proactive approach to public safety and governance, setting the stage for future community engagement and legislative advocacy.
