Austin's commitment to bridging the digital divide was front and center during a recent city council meeting, where officials kicked off Digital Inclusion Week, scheduled for October 6-10. Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes emphasized the importance of ensuring that all residents have access to essential digital tools, including high-speed internet and reliable devices, which are crucial for education, work, and healthcare.

The meeting celebrated the recipients of the Grama for Technology Opportunities Program (GTOPS), which funds organizations dedicated to enhancing digital access and skills in underserved communities. Fuentes highlighted that the work of GTOPS grantees is vital for creating a more inclusive and economically robust Austin. “Closing the digital gap is critical to building a more inclusive, connected, and economically strong Austin,” she stated.

Anne Eaton, assistant director for the economic development department, echoed these sentiments, noting that digital inclusion is not just about access but also about equipping residents with the skills needed to thrive in a digital economy. She pointed out that this year's GTOPS awardees are making significant strides in providing workforce training and digital tools to a broader audience.

Steven Apodaca, chair of the technology commission, shared impressive statistics about the impact of GTOPS since its inception. The program has awarded over $4 million in grants to various organizations, reflecting the transformative power of these initiatives in the community. “These figures represent more than just numbers. They reflect lives changed, opportunities created, and futures transformed,” Apodaca remarked.

The meeting concluded with the recognition of the 2025 GTOPS recipients, which include a diverse array of organizations such as Art Spark Texas, Austin's Children Museum, and Dress for Success Austin. Mayor Pro Tem Fuentes expressed gratitude to all awardees for their dedication to advancing digital equity in Austin.
