Tulsa is set to enhance its water management system with the rollout of automated water meters, beginning in 2024 and continuing over the next four years. This initiative, known as True Reads, will see the installation of new meters at over 145,000 residential locations throughout the city.
The decision to transition to automated meter reading technology comes as advancements have made it both financially and operationally beneficial. The new meters will reduce the need for property access, lower meter reading costs, decrease employee injuries, eliminate estimated billing, and utilize more environmentally friendly technology.
Residents will be kept informed throughout the installation process. The city will maintain an updated online map showing neighborhoods where installations are taking place, accessible at cityoftulsa.org/truereads. Additionally, homeowners will receive a door hanger with information about the installation one to two weeks prior, and contractors will personally notify residents on the day of the installation.
During the meter replacement, residents may experience a brief water interruption of up to 30 minutes. After the installation, it is recommended to run the water for a few minutes to restore pressure and clear any cloudiness that may occur.
As part of this process, contractors will also conduct lead service line inspections. Although the city believes there are few, if any, lead service lines remaining, this inspection aims to identify and document any that may still exist, ensuring the safety of the water supply. Results from these inspections will also be available on the online map.
