Lori’s Place is the only certified provider in Cochise County for certain sexual-assault examinations, the speakers said; without Lori’s Place, those exams would require travel to Tucson.

Michelle outlined ways the community can help: donations (new women’s clothing sizes medium and large, leggings, underwear and bras), corporate sponsorships and joining a “200 Club” donor program. “If you’ve never been a victim of domestic violence, it’s very eye opening,” she said, urging attendance.

Separately, Captain Christy from the Salvation Army discussed a “Victory Over Addiction” event scheduled Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at Veterans Memorial Park. The Salvation Army planned to bring its emergency-services (EDS) “Lily van,” serve water and snacks, and staff a booth alongside about 20 vendors offering harm reduction, sober living, peer support, overdose prevention and legal-aid information. Corporal Borckstadt said law enforcement would not have a strong enforcement presence at the event to encourage attendance by people seeking services.

Organizers also noted that Sierra Vista’s National Night Out is scheduled for Oct. 10 at Veterans Memorial Park from 5–8 p.m.; organizers expect a large turnout and said last year’s event attracted about 7,000 people.
