In a recent Hillsborough County meeting, the Land Use Hearing Officer reviewed two significant applications for alcoholic beverage permits that could impact local businesses and community dynamics.

The first application came from Mangosteen restaurant, located at 3825 North Dale Boulevard. Owner Panarak Ray Namasa presented a request for a special use license to sell beer, wine, and liquor both on and off the premises. Namasa emphasized the need for this permit to enhance customer experience, supported by a petition signed by six pages of patrons. The restaurant faces challenges in maintaining operations and hopes that the permit will provide a much-needed boost.

The proposal included two waivers: one concerning the proximity to a nearby daycare, which is approximately 157 feet away, and another regarding the number of existing alcoholic beverage permits in the area, which exceeds the typical limit. Development services staff reviewed the application and recommended approval, noting that the daycare is fenced off and oriented away from the restaurant, minimizing potential impacts. The hearing concluded with no opposition from the community, paving the way for a favorable outcome for Mangosteen.

The second application was presented by E and J Promotions, LLC, for a new venture called Sugar and Whiskey Lounge at 4802 Gunn Highway. This establishment seeks a similar 4 COP liquor license to operate within a shopping plaza. The applicant highlighted that the previous license holder had ceased operations, and they aim to revitalize the space with a cigar and whiskey lounge.

This request also included a waiver for distance separation from residential properties, with the nearest home located just 216 feet away. Development services supported this waiver, citing the separation provided by a roadway and the orientation of residential homes away from the proposed lounge.

Both applications reflect a growing trend in Hillsborough County to adapt local businesses to meet community demands while navigating regulatory requirements.
