The Carroll Children's Museum is seeking funding to secure a permanent location in the Westgate Mall, a move that could significantly enhance its operations and community offerings. During a recent meeting of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, executive directors Marcy Hercock and Amy Shoemaker outlined their vision for the museum, which opened its doors in December 2023 and has quickly expanded due to community support and demand.
Currently, the museum operates in two adjacent spaces after a recent expansion, but the directors emphasized that purchasing the property would alleviate the burden of monthly rent, which totals approximately $2,100 with utilities. This financial relief would allow the museum to reinvest its income into improving visitor experiences, expanding programming, and potentially creating more jobs.
The museum has already established a solid foundation with 18 exhibits, thanks to local sponsorships, and has plans to further enhance its offerings. Hercock and Shoemaker highlighted the importance of having a permanent home to ensure the museum's sustainability and growth. They are currently exploring funding options, including a one-time commitment from the board as part of a capital campaign for fiscal year 2026.
In addition to admission fees and memberships, which currently generate income, the directors are actively pursuing grants and have initiated discussions with the city of Maryland regarding potential funding opportunities. They aim to secure additional support to help realize their vision of a thriving community resource for children and families.
The board's decision on the funding request could play a crucial role in the museum's future, potentially transforming it into a cornerstone of educational and recreational activities for the Carroll County community.
