The New Kent County Board of Supervisors convened on September 29, 2025, to discuss a significant proposal aimed at improving cellular service in the Lenexa area. The board reviewed a proposed option and lease agreement with Towers LLC for a 10,000 square foot parcel of county-owned land located at 12400 Old Telegraph Road, which is also home to the Old Telegraph Refuge site.
The agreement allows Towers LLC to conduct necessary due diligence for the construction of a new cell tower, which includes applying for a conditional use permit as mandated by county regulations. This initiative is particularly important for residents in the campgrounds and the Colonies neighborhood, where cellular service has been lacking.
Initially, Towers LLC proposed an annual lease payment of $6,500, but they have since increased their offer to $12,000, with a 3% annual increase. Additionally, the rent for subsequent tenants on the tower will rise by $75 per month. County staff expressed support for the agreement, highlighting its potential to enhance communication services for local residents.
This proposal reflects the board's commitment to addressing community needs, particularly in areas where reliable cellular service is essential for both residents and visitors. As the board moves forward with this agreement, it aims to ensure that the Lenexa area is better connected, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
