The Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) Board of Trustees in Illinois has launched a new webinar series aimed at connecting with retirees, focusing on crucial health insurance changes as they approach the age of 65. The first session, held on September 29, 2025, provided essential information about the transition from the Teachers Retirement Insurance Program (TRIP) to the Total Retiree Advantage Illinois (TRAIL) plan.

During the webinar, attendees learned that TRIP serves as the primary health insurance for members under 65, offering various plans including HMO, OAP, and PPO options. Notably, starting July 1, 2025, TRIP will also include dental and vision coverage, a significant enhancement for retirees. The annual enrollment period for TRIP is set for May, allowing members to enroll without needing a specific reason.

As members turn 65, they become eligible for TRAIL, a Medicare Advantage plan that bundles Medicare Parts C and D, providing comprehensive coverage including prescription drugs. TRAIL, administered by Aetna, will also offer dental and vision benefits starting January 1, 2025. The enrollment period for TRAIL runs from mid-October to mid-November, with coverage beginning on January 1.

Eligibility for both TRIP and TRAIL requires at least eight years of service credit with TRS, and members can enroll during various opportunities, including upon retirement or when they lose other coverage. The webinar emphasized that these health insurance options are vital for retirees, ensuring they have access to necessary medical services as they transition into Medicare.
