Johnson County, Kansas, marked a poignant observance on September 28, 2025, honoring Gold Star families—those who have lost a loved one in military service. The gathering took place at the Gold Star Family Memorial in Olathe, a significant site dedicated to remembering these families.

Gerald Hay, a communication specialist for Johnson County and a Vietnam War veteran, led the ceremony. He highlighted the importance of the memorial, which is part of the Hershey Williams Foundation's initiative that features 147 memorials across 50 states. Notably, this memorial is the only one in Kansas, dedicated five years ago to honor the sacrifices made by service members and their families.

The memorial includes a battlefield cross, a powerful symbol of remembrance, donated by a Gold Star family in memory of their son, an Army specialist who was killed in Iraq in February 2007. This tribute not only honors his service but also recognizes the ongoing grief and sacrifice experienced by his family and others like them.
