Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Commission is pushing for a significant upgrade in training and equipment, aiming to enhance local emergency response capabilities. During a recent meeting, officials discussed the need for a dedicated technical rescue class to be hosted annually in the county, reducing reliance on distant and competitive state-hosted training sessions.
The proposal includes a budget request of approximately $80,000 to cover essential training and equipment costs. This budget would facilitate the inspection and upgrade of current dive gear, purchase new rope systems, and secure a vendor to conduct a technician-level training class. The breakdown includes $5,000 for dive equipment inspections, $15,000 for a full rope setup, and $25,000 for additional dive gear. The largest expense is the training class, estimated at $35,000.
Commission members emphasized the importance of establishing a timeline for implementation. If approved, the team would be formed in early 2025, with training beginning in the spring and equipment purchases slated for summer. This initiative aims to build a robust technical rescue team capable of responding to various incidents, ensuring that local responders are well-trained and equipped.
Additionally, discussions included the potential for ongoing budget allocations to maintain and update equipment annually, inspired by successful models from other counties. The commission is also exploring grant opportunities, such as the Homeland Security Grant, to support funding for urban search and rescue equipment.
The outcome of this proposal could significantly enhance the county's emergency response capabilities, ensuring that local teams are prepared for any situation.
