Shaker Heights City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing community livability with the approval of a $150,000 grant application for pedestrian improvements along Lee Road. During the recent meeting, Ms. O'Donnell highlighted the importance of this funding, which is part of the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI).
Earlier this year, the city was awarded $350,000 in TLCI grants aimed at improving pedestrian infrastructure as outlined in the Lee Road Action Plan. However, as engineering work progressed, a funding shortfall for these improvements became apparent. The additional $150,000 will support essential upgrades, including lighting, sidewalks, wayfinding, and other pedestrian amenities, contributing to a more inviting streetscape.
The city has successfully secured over $24 million in grant funds for the overall Lee Road Complete Streets project, which aims to create a safer and more accessible environment for all road users. Notably, no local match is required for this grant, making it a financially advantageous opportunity for the city. The application deadline is set for October 10, necessitating the council's swift approval.
This initiative not only aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility but also reflects the city's commitment to fostering a vibrant and livable community. As the council moves forward with this application, residents can look forward to a more pedestrian-friendly Lee Road in the near future.
