Calvert County is set to see significant improvements in transportation safety and infrastructure following a recent meeting with the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). During the Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting on September 30, 2025, MDOT officials presented their draft six-year Consolidated Transportation Program (CTP), which outlines a strategic investment of approximately $21.5 billion statewide, including key projects in Calvert County.

A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of $32.5 million allocated for safety projects along the Maryland 231 Corridor. This includes enhancements at critical intersections, such as adding left turn lanes and bicycle lanes, aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing accidents. The projects are scheduled for design and construction phases starting in 2026 and 2028.

MDOT Secretary Samantha Biddle emphasized the importance of safety, stating that the department is committed to reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The draft CTP reflects this commitment, with funding aimed at maintaining existing infrastructure and driving economic growth across Maryland. Notably, the program includes $88,000 for a Safe Streets for All action plan demonstration project in collaboration with the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.

In addition to safety improvements, the meeting highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance public transit in Calvert County. The Maryland Transit Administration announced nearly $1.5 million in grants to support local transit operations, which will help improve accessibility and mobility for residents.
