Deanna Taylor, a postsecondary transition specialist at the Utah Board of Education, welcomed participants to the first session of a series aimed at enhancing pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS) for students aged 14 and older.

The meeting stemmed from a year-long effort to better understand the needs of educators working with students with disabilities. A survey conducted among middle school educators revealed that while 79% felt familiar with the postsecondary transition process, significant challenges remained. Key issues identified included the need for family and student engagement, resource availability, and realistic goal-setting. Educators expressed a desire for clearer guidance and improved collaboration to support students effectively.

Taylor emphasized the necessity of starting transition planning earlier than the legally mandated age of 14, citing research that indicates better outcomes when planning begins sooner. This initiative aims to provide educators with the tools and resources needed to facilitate smoother transitions for students as they move from middle school to high school and eventually into the workforce.

Maria Baldwin, a Pre-ETS program specialist from the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation, took the floor to outline the objectives of the session.
