The Norwalk School District's Facilities Planning Committee has unveiled a comprehensive conceptual plan for the renovation and expansion of West Rock School, aiming to enhance educational facilities while minimizing disruption to current operations. The proposed project includes the addition of a two- to three-story structure at the southeast corner of the site, which will allow for a phased construction approach that keeps the existing school operational during the process.

The plan addresses initial concerns regarding the use of athletic fields, which are relatively new and were thought to be at risk during construction. However, the committee has determined that developing on the fields will enable the school to remain active, with minimal disruption aside from the temporary loss of the fields.

Key features of the new design include separate drop-off areas for buses and parents, reducing traffic impact on surrounding residential areas. The layout also incorporates outdoor instructional spaces and a central auditorium that can facilitate both indoor and outdoor events. The school is designed to accommodate a total population of 720 students, with flexible classroom arrangements to support various grade levels.

The committee emphasized the importance of creating common spaces, such as a gymnasium, cafeteria, and media center, which are strategically located to minimize noise disruption to academic areas. The proposed building will span approximately 121,000 square feet, aligning with state eligibility requirements for funding.

As the project moves forward, the committee will continue to refine the educational specifications to ensure that the new facilities meet the needs of students and staff.
