The Centre County Board of Commissioners held a meeting on October 1, 2025, where they discussed several community-focused initiatives, including the upcoming Day of Caring and transportation improvements.
One of the most significant announcements was the proclamation of October 9 as a Day of Caring in Centre County. This event, organized by the United Way, marks its 32nd year and encourages community members to volunteer for various local charities. Celeste and Megan from the United Way highlighted the involvement of over 1,000 volunteers, including students from Bellefonte Area High School, who will participate in projects across the county. The Day of Caring aims to foster community spirit and support for non-profit organizations that often operate quietly but serve thousands of residents.
Commissioner Concepcion emphasized the importance of volunteerism, noting that the event not only helps local charities but also encourages participants to consider ongoing volunteer opportunities. The commissioners expressed gratitude to PNC Bank for their long-standing sponsorship of the event and acknowledged the contributions of volunteers who dedicate their time to support community needs.
In addition to the Day of Caring, the meeting included discussions on transportation improvements. The Board approved a PennDOT public transportation capital grant agreement for the purchase of new vehicles for the shared ride transportation program, totaling $285,000. This funding will allow the county to acquire two Ford Transit vans and a Chrysler Voyager, enhancing transportation options for residents, particularly those with disabilities.
The commissioners also addressed a contract renewal for haircuts at the Kreshall facility, which has been provided by Nicole Lucas for over two decades. This service, funded through individual accounts or the commissary account for those in need, plays a vital role in maintaining the dignity of individuals at the correctional facility.
Overall, the meeting underscored the county's commitment to community engagement and improving services for residents, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing local needs and fostering a spirit of collaboration among citizens and organizations.
