The Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing has approved a modified consent order for registered nurse Christy Ilowitz, extending her probation period from three to four years due to repeated violations of her initial consent order. This decision, made during the board's recent meeting, aims to enhance oversight and support for Ilowitz, who has faced challenges related to substance abuse.
Originally placed on probation on April 1, 2023, Ilowitz's consent order required her to undergo random urine screenings, submit therapy and employer reports, and attend support group meetings. However, she violated these terms by using benzodiazepines and tramadol, prompting the board to reassess her situation.
The new consent order, effective immediately, extends her probation until March 31, 2027. It includes stricter conditions such as continued urine screenings, therapy reports, and medication management reports, along with a prohibition on solo employment. The board emphasized the importance of these measures to ensure Ilowitz receives the necessary support while safeguarding public health.
During the meeting, board members expressed concerns about the adequacy of the probation period, particularly given Ilowitz's recent violations. Some members questioned whether 18 months of probation following her last violation would be sufficient to ensure compliance and recovery.
The board's decision reflects a commitment to maintaining high standards in nursing practice while providing a pathway for rehabilitation. As Ilowitz navigates this extended probation, the board will closely monitor her progress to ensure both her well-being and the safety of patients in her care.
