Kokomo's Common Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing its waste management services by introducing a new ordinance that imposes a monthly trash collection fee for residential customers. The ordinance, presented by Councilman Miklick during the September 29 meeting, aims to streamline trash and recycling services while ensuring fair costs for residents.
Starting January 2026, eligible residential units will incur a fee of $10 per month for trash collection, which will increase to $15 in 2028. This fee is designed to cover the costs of city-provided trash and recycling services, which have historically been funded by the city. The council emphasized that using a single trash collection service for all residents offers substantial savings compared to individual contracts with private haulers.
The ordinance also includes provisions for discounts aimed at low-income households and senior citizens. Residents who qualify for certain property tax deductions may receive a reduction in their trash fees, ensuring that the financial burden is eased for those who need it most. Additionally, households demonstrating limited income will be eligible for a $5 discount on their monthly fee.
Each residential unit will receive two canisters—one for trash and one for recycling—further promoting efficient waste management practices. The council has established a dedicated fund to manage the revenues from these fees, ensuring transparency and accountability in the collection process.
As the ordinance moves forward, it reflects Kokomo's commitment to providing essential services while balancing the financial responsibilities of its residents. The council anticipates that this structured approach will lead to improved waste management and a cleaner community.
