The City of Athens, Ohio, celebrated a significant milestone with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Athens Armory on October 2, 2025. This historic building, which has stood for 111 years, has been transformed into a community hub, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local leaders, contractors, and organizations.
Director Stone highlighted the contributions of key project team members, including architect Colin Widows and general contractor Pepper Construction, among others. He expressed gratitude to local nonprofits like Blue Dot, which will operate the facility, and the Athens County Foundation, which will establish its permanent home there. Stone emphasized the importance of the Athens Community Improvement Corporation (ACIC) in facilitating the project, noting that its board includes elected officials and community members dedicated to local development.
Mayor Steve Patterson, who has been a pivotal figure in this project, reflected on the building's rich history and its role in the community. He recalled the emotional moment of hearing the national anthem played in the armory for the first time, a testament to its revival. Patterson praised the vision of former leaders who fought to preserve the building, ensuring it would serve the community rather than face demolition.
The ceremony not only marked the completion of a complex renovation but also underscored the collaborative spirit of Athens. As the community looks forward to utilizing the armory for various events and services, the project stands as a symbol of resilience and commitment to local heritage.
