Murrysville officials have approved the installation of a new 2.4 million-gallon potable water storage tank, a critical step in enhancing the community's water supply and fire protection capabilities. The decision was made during the recent council meeting on October 2, 2025, where the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County (MAWC) presented their plans for the new tank, which will be built adjacent to the existing 5 million-gallon tank on Lyons Run Road.
The existing tank, constructed in 1980, requires significant rehabilitation, including concrete repairs and waterproofing, which will take approximately three to four months. During this period, the new tank will ensure that the community maintains adequate water storage and fire protection. The dual-tank system will not only provide redundancy but also enhance overall service reliability.
MAWC requested two waivers during the approval process. The first waiver pertains to the amenities bond, which was deemed unnecessary due to the existing performance bond exceeding the required amount for stormwater management. The second waiver relates to landscaping requirements, allowing for the use of existing healthy vegetation to meet buffer standards instead of new plantings.
The council's approval, following a favorable recommendation from the planning commission, underscores the municipality's commitment to maintaining essential services while addressing infrastructure needs. The project is expected to bolster water supply reliability and improve fire safety for residents in the area. As the construction progresses, the community can look forward to enhanced water service and protection measures.
