Evansville's Board of Public Works has taken significant steps to enhance the longevity of city roads and improve traffic safety during their recent meeting on October 31, 2024. The board approved an interlocal agreement aimed at preventive sealing of newly paved roads, which is expected to cover approximately 400,000 square yards this year. This initiative is designed to extend the life of the pavement, providing immediate waterproofing benefits and long-term cost savings for the city.

City engineers highlighted that the sealing process, which began in the spring, has already shown promising results. The first application was observed on Pollock Avenue, where the treated pavement appears to be in excellent condition, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new approach. Officials noted that while the full benefits of this preventive maintenance may take years to fully materialize, the initial outcomes are encouraging.

In addition to the sealing project, the board approved an amendment for the Crosspoint Roundabout project, increasing the contract with Lochmuller Group, Inc. by $24,600. This adjustment brings the total contract amount to $420,500 and is specifically allocated for the design of new lighting at the roundabout and its approaches. The existing lighting system will be replaced with standard city street lights, enhancing visibility and safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
