The Scranton School District is celebrating a significant achievement as it has been recognized as an outstanding visual arts community for the 2024-2025 school year by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. Superintendent Ryan Knapp played a crucial role in securing this honor, and the district plans to formally acknowledge this accomplishment in an upcoming event.
In addition to this accolade, the district is set to host a student, employee, and family immunization clinic for COVID-19 and flu shots on October 8 at Scranton High School and on October 5 at West Scranton High School. Registration for the clinics is available through the district's website and social media pages.
The meeting also highlighted the upcoming professional development day for staff, with no students in school on that day. Furthermore, the district is preparing to implement a state-mandated personal finance course in the fall of 2026, which will be integrated into the K-12 curriculum.
October is recognized as National Principal's Month, and the district is taking the opportunity to honor its principals for their dedication and hard work. Additionally, it is National Physical Therapy Month, acknowledging the vital role physical therapists play in supporting students.
However, the meeting took a serious turn as Superintendent Knapp addressed the ongoing state budget impasse, which is adversely affecting educational opportunities in the district. He expressed concern over the removal of after-school tutoring and field trips, as well as the postponement of professional development for staff. Knapp emphasized the urgent need for resolution in Harrisburg, stating that the budget stalemate should not hinder the education of children in Scranton.
As the meeting concluded, the district recognized students and staff for their achievements, including a special acknowledgment for Caitlin Manley, a student who represented the district at the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security. The recognition of such accomplishments underscores the district's commitment to fostering excellence despite the challenges posed by the budget situation.
