Ithaca school board approves modest pay increase for substitute nurses

The Ithaca City School District Board of Education on Jan. 14 approved an increase in hourly pay for substitute registered nurses for the 2024–25 school year. The board voted unanimously to raise the rate from $31.50 to $32.75 per hour for newly hired per diem nurses and to increase returning substitute nurses’ pay by $1.25 an hour.
The change was moved by Adam, board member, and seconded by Jill, board member. After brief discussion the board chair called the question; the motion passed unanimously.
Why it matters: The district said the change is intended to improve recruitment and retention of per diem nurses during the current school year. Carrie Burke, staff member, explained how rates apply to different categories of substitutes in the district: “So nurses who have previously worked in their district, retire from the district, actually work at the rate at which they've retired at.” Burke said most of the board-approved substitutes are retired district nurses and that a small number of substitutes are newly hired per diem nurses who will receive the 4% increase.
The board did not amend the school-year designation; the increase applies to the 2024–25 school year only, as stated in the motion. No further implementation details or budget offsets were announced at the meeting.
