Several residents used the meeting’s public comment period Monday to press the council on two community issues: child‑safety education and homelessness outreach.
Kyle Sims urged the council to organize public education on threats to children, citing recent cases statewide and asking the council, school board and county commissioners to hold town halls, informational sessions and a task force. “What I'm asking this council to do ... let's start getting some educational seminars out to the public,” Sims said. He said he would help organize and offered expertise and social-media reach but noted many parents are not on social platforms.
Paul Ballesteros, a resident and founder of a local nonprofit working with people experiencing homelessness, said homelessness comprises about “point 02% of our population” in McKinney and called for more intentional neighbor engagement before enforcement actions. He described his organization’s services as a filter to identify those seeking help and urged residents to meet people where they are.
Councilman Jones acknowledged Sims’s request and said he would work with another councilmember to bring the matter forward, including placing the topic in executive‑session follow up for planning a seminar. The council did not adopt a formal policy or allocate funds at the meeting; Jones said staff and council would follow up to determine next steps.
No formal council action was taken during public comment; the speakers’ requests were recorded and a councilmember agreed to pursue follow up.
