Sheriff signs interim towing MOU; county amends interlocal inmate-transfer rate with Posey County

Vanderburgh County commissioners on Sept. 24 approved a memorandum of understanding that gives Tri State Towing interim exclusive towing services for disabled, abandoned and impounded vehicles for the sheriff’s office while the county finalizes a three-year contract. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) will remain in effect until commissioners review and approve a formal three-year towing contract, scheduled for Oct. 15, 2024. County staff said Tri State agreed to the interim arrangement so the sheriff’s office can continue having a known vendor for towing and storage while the contract is finalized. The board also approved a change to a local interlocal agreement with Posey County governing the transfer and housing of inmates. The revised agreement sets the transfer rate at $40 per day plus the cost of medical expenses when Posey County accepts Vanderburgh County inmates if the county jail is overcrowded or otherwise unable to house individuals. Sheriff’s Office staff reported Posey County currently houses about 40 of Vanderburgh County’s inmates — roughly 40 of the 140 inmates the county currently has housed out. Both motions passed unanimously with recorded Yes votes from Commissioner Gable, Commissioner Musgrave and President Elpers.
