County staff told the commission that advanced ordering is necessary because heavy equipment can have long lead times and the county has experienced waits of more than a year. The purchase is included in next year's budget; staff said they will submit the purchase order at the start of the fiscal year.
"We have the motor grader we'd like to purchase ahead of time," the Public Works Director said, explaining the model (a joystick-controlled model 14) and the price quoted by the dealer. He said the grader being replaced has more than 8,000 hours and that surplus sales of such equipment commonly fetch $50,000 to $70,000, which the county includes as estimated revenue in the budget.
A motion to sign the proposal to purchase the Caterpillar road grader at the price mentioned was made and seconded; the commission voted in favor.
Staff did not name a delivery date but said lead times vary; they expect to place the purchase order after the new budget is approved and that payment will be due when the grader arrives. The commission did not discuss financing beyond noting the purchase is budgeted for the upcoming year.
