Commission approves updated IT-director job description and authorizes recruitment ahead of planned retirement

Ellis County commissioners on Oct. 7 approved an updated job description for the county information-technology director that adds cybersecurity certification or experience as a desirable qualification and authorized staff to begin recruitment in November to allow overlap with the incumbent prior to his planned retirement.
County Administrator Darren Myers explained the only substantive change to the posted job description was the addition of cybersecurity certifications or demonstrable cybersecurity experience. Myers said IT Director Mike (first name used in the record) has announced his retirement effective in early 2026 and county staff would like to start advertising and interviewing in November and December so a new hire can begin in January and work alongside Mike during a transition.
Commissioners approved the revised job description by voice vote, 2–0. No salary or candidate names were discussed in the meeting record. Myers said HR will advertise through appropriate IT professional groups identified by the incumbent and will coordinate interviews with the commission if needed.
The board’s action authorizes staff to proceed with recruitment but does not constitute an employment offer; any hire will follow regular selection and appointment processes.
