The Porterville City Council selected "Overland Park and Recreation Center" as the name for the city's new park and recreation center, following staff'led outreach that produced 127 name submissions and a Parks and Leisure Services Commission shortlist.
Deputy City Manager Moore told the council the commission reviewed nominations and forwarded five finalists for council consideration: Fourth Street Park and Rec Center, Porter Park and Rec Center, Henderson Park and Rec Center, Overland Park and Rec Center, and Santa Fe Park and Rec Center. Councilmembers discussed pros and cons of several options and multiple members said they favored Overland for its historical association with the Overland Stage and regional heritage. One councilmember noted Fourth Street's straightforward locational clarity.
Council also supported incorporating local historical imagery and interpretive materials into the new facility, including a potential mural in a public area and display of historic photos. Deputy City Manager Moore said the facility will include a lobby and public space where such interpretive elements could be placed; a separate public-art or mural process will follow design guidelines.
The council voted to adopt Overland Park and Rec Center as the facility name and directed staff to proceed with design elements that include historical context.
