Council approves $100,000 request for Veterans Park monument; vote 3-2

Opponents said the project should not leap ahead of other park needs identified in the city's 2024 parks master plan. Councilmember Beltran pointed to the parks plan, which lists multiple higher-priority repairs and safety upgrades at Veterans Park and other city parks, and urged the council to redirect limited funds to those needs or seek broader community input before spending. He also objected to placing the item on the consent calendar without prior Parks Commission review.

The council approved the staff recommendation to distribute a request for qualifications (RFQ) for the monument and to proceed under the $100,000 line item in the capital budget. Staff said the RFQ process will return design options and cost estimates to the council for final approval; the $100,000 is a budget authorization, and final contract amounts will depend on submitted proposals.
