Recreation department seeks grant to add all‑terrain wheelchairs after successful obstacle event

Pleasant Grove’s recreation director told the council the city’s first wheelchair obstacle event — dubbed the Berserker Blitz — drew about 50 participants and will be held annually, and staff submitted a grant to acquire all‑terrain wheelchairs for community use. The recreation director described logistical challenges but said the event was emotionally rewarding: participants wearing bibs crossed the finish line and volunteers, including the local high school football team, helped push wheelchair users through the course. “It turned out to be a really cool, little community event,” the director said. “I think we had about 50 participants.” The city is partnering with Extreme Modus, which makes all‑terrain wheelchairs, and the director said a grant application was filed that could provide three wheelchairs. If awarded, the city would keep the wheelchairs at the recreation center and make them available for residents to check out for outdoor use at no charge. The recreation director said the program aims to broaden outdoor access for people who use wheelchairs: “We won’t charge them. We'll just use this grant to give anybody that's in a wheelchair opportunity to be out in the woods and somewhere new.” The council supported making the event an annual offering and encouraged continued partnerships with community groups. No formal council vote was recorded; staff reported the grant submission and asked for continued support in outreach and event planning.
