The Galveston Planning Commission convened on October 7, 2025, to discuss a significant request for the abandonment of a city right-of-way adjacent to properties on Sportsman Road. The proposal involves approximately 18,134 square feet of street right-of-way, which is currently improved and 50 feet wide, terminating at Galveston's West Bay.
Two applicants, each owning property on either side of the right-of-way, have submitted the request. Public notices were sent out, and the commission received 11 responses opposing the abandonment. City departments, including public works, have indicated that a 20-foot wide drainage easement will be necessary, regardless of the abandonment's approval. Additionally, CenterPoint Energy has requested a street and alley closure as part of their internal processes.
City staff noted that the abandonment would not significantly impact the transportation system, as the right-of-way is short and dead ends into the bay. The area surrounding the right-of-way is primarily zoned for single-family detached homes, with some developed properties and many vacant lots, particularly to the south.
The Galveston City Council is set to make the final decision on this request during their meeting on October 23, 2025. Should the abandonment be approved, specific conditions and requirements will be applied as outlined in the staff report. The commission concluded the discussion with a review of visual aids, including surveys and photographs of the area in question.
