A proposed bike path project in Huber Heights is gaining attention as city officials seek funding to enhance local transportation options. During a recent council work session, leaders discussed plans for the Chambersburg Road and City of Dayton paved bike path trail, which aims to connect Huber Heights to the Great Miami River Trail.
The project will extend an existing bike path along Chambersburg Road, creating an 11-foot-wide asphalt trail that stretches approximately 4,850 feet. The path will run from Old Troy to Endicott, then continue west into Dayton, passing through the Warriors soccer fields and connecting to Fishburg Road. The estimated construction cost is $1,046,760, with the city applying for $500,000 in funding through the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission's Transportation Alternatives Program.
Council members emphasized the importance of the bike path for community walkability and bikeability, noting that it would benefit Huber Heights residents. However, discussions revealed challenges in securing support from the City of Dayton, as officials expressed concerns about the lack of direct benefits to Dayton residents. This has raised questions about potential collaboration and funding contributions from Dayton.
As the project moves forward, city officials are optimistic about the potential for improved transportation options, but they acknowledge the need for further discussions with Dayton to explore joint funding opportunities. The timeline for construction could extend up to four years, pending funding approval and project design.
