The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) took a significant step forward in its strategic planning during a recent meeting, approving a comprehensive report that outlines its goals and strategies for 2025. The final report, presented by strategic planning facilitator Mark McCain, was developed through extensive input from both the board and staff during an August workshop.
McCain emphasized the importance of having a strategic plan, likening organizations without one to "first-time canoers" navigating aimlessly, while those with a plan operate like a "collegiate rowing team," moving in unison towards shared objectives. The approved plan reaffirms FPUA's mission to provide economical, reliable, and friendly service while enhancing the community's quality of life.
Key components of the strategic plan include five major goals: modernization of utility systems, workforce development, enhancing customer relations, aligning utility services with economic growth, and fostering organizational development. Each goal is supported by specific strategies, such as improving cybersecurity, enhancing customer communication, and ensuring a high-performing workforce through training and recruitment.
The board also discussed the importance of ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the plan's implementation, with suggestions for periodic progress reports to ensure accountability. This proactive approach aims to prevent the strategic plan from becoming just another document gathering dust.
As FPUA moves forward, the focus will be on developing action plans for each strategy, aligning budgets, and communicating the plan both internally and externally. The board's commitment to these goals signals a strong direction for the utility's future, with an emphasis on collaboration and community engagement.
