Attendance and revenue soared at Mesker Park Zoo, with August and September marking record months, largely thanks to the successful "Wild Summer Lights" event. The zoo reported a staggering 185,659 visitors through September, surpassing last year's total attendance and on track to exceed 200,000 by year-end.
The financial figures are equally impressive, with August generating a record $60,000 in gross sales, followed by $51,000 in September. The event significantly boosted gift shop sales, with visitors flocking to purchase souvenirs during the lantern displays. The zoo's partnership with venue works also yielded a notable increase in sales, contributing to the overall revenue.
"Wild Summer Lights," which concluded on October 5, attracted nearly 50,000 attendees over its eight-week run, far exceeding initial expectations of 30,000 to 40,000 tickets sold. The event's popularity was evident, with sold-out nights in the final weekends. The diverse audience included families and individuals who appreciated the accessibility options, such as free tram rides for those with mobility challenges.
Looking ahead, the zoo plans to continue the lantern event next year, promising new displays to enhance the experience. Corporate sponsorships, including Liberty Credit Union as the main title sponsor, are expected to grow, further solidifying the event's success and community engagement. The zoo's leadership expressed optimism about building on this momentum, ensuring that "Wild Summer Lights" becomes a staple in Evansville's cultural calendar.
