Young Tan, director of the Baltimore County Department of Aging, told listeners that the department’s Power of Age Expo will be held Oct. 29 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium and is designed for older adults, caregivers, people with disabilities and professionals.
“It's 1 of the largest events of its kind in the Mid Atlantic,” Tan said, adding that the expo “draws more than 6 to 7,000 people every year.” He said proceeds from the event go “directly to our seniors in need program,” helping people pay for medication, utility bills and food.
The broadcast outlined the event’s main attractions: a central Center Hall (described in the program as the Cow Palace building) with a welcome center and tote bags sponsored by Johns Hopkins Health Plans; extensive exhibitor halls with a caregiver corner, vendor games and on-site services; vaccination clinics in the South Hall; a pickleball championship for players in their 60s to 90s; a model smart home demonstration; a veterans muster area hosted with the Towson Elks and the Baltimore County Commission on Veterans Affairs; and an area showcasing Baltimore County’s 20 senior centers plus a virtual center.
Organizers also highlighted a volunteer fair run by the Baltimore County Volunteer Center in partnership with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), and a creative arts contest sponsored by CCBC with winners announced on the main stage. Tan said the main stage will feature continuous entertainment, including senior center performances and bands, and that the county executive will give welcoming remarks at noon.
Public-service information aired during the program noted that the Medicare Part D open enrollment period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 and that the BCDA State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is available for help at (410) 887-2059. Tan offered practical advice for attendees: come early, wear comfortable shoes and “come fully charged” with batteries for devices; he also advised being selective about sharing personal information with vendors.
Short on-air comments from attendees underscored the event’s resource focus: one attendee said they appreciated the range of services and “just love how everything comes together under 1 roof,” and another noted the social value of talking with vendors and finding information about housing and education.
