During the recent City Council meeting, representatives from Sage International Charter Schools presented their plans for a new facility, emphasizing the importance of educational choice within the public school system.

Sage International's Executive Director, Emily Downey, expressed gratitude for the planned donation of land for the school, which aims to serve a diverse student population through a lottery-based enrollment system. Downey noted that the school would prioritize Kuna residents, ensuring local families have access to quality education without imposing additional financial burdens on taxpayers. "We build our facilities with no levies and no burden on the local taxpayers," she stated, highlighting the use of state funds and private financing.

The proposed school is set to open in phases, starting with grades K-4 in 2028 and expanding to K-12 based on community demand. This phased approach mirrors successful models used in other districts, such as Middleton, where the school has thrived over the years.

Council members raised concerns about the potential impact on existing public schools, particularly regarding special education services and sports programs. Downey reassured the council that Sage International adheres to the same equal access laws as traditional districts and actively tracks data related to student needs. "We received the same federal funding to support those students as well," she explained.

Community support for the school is evident, with local parents expressing enthusiasm for the educational opportunities Sage International could provide. One Kuna resident, Jackie Gogin, shared her family's positive experiences with Sage's Boise campus, noting the challenges of commuting and the desire for a local option. "We believe that the educational choice that Sage offers will complement the educational programming offered by the Kuna district," she wrote.
