The recent Planning Board Meeting in Rome, NY, highlighted significant developments regarding Chobani's expansion project at Griffiss Technology Park. Civil engineer Bridal from Netprol Consulting provided an update on the project, which had previously received site plan approval in June.
The meeting revealed that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) raised concerns about the height of the proposed warehouse structure, which was initially too tall for their line of sight. In response, Chobani has reconfigured their plans, relocating the warehouse to a parcel of land previously used as a golf course, which the county now leases to the company. This strategic move is expected to alleviate FAA concerns, as the new location will not obstruct the view from the airport tower to the runway.
The maximum height of the warehouse has been set at 130 feet, a reduction from the previously discussed height of 160 feet. This adjustment is crucial for compliance with FAA regulations, ensuring that the structure does not interfere with air traffic operations. Additionally, the project includes silos that will reach 100 feet, with beacons on top to meet safety requirements.
Bridal emphasized that the new layout not only addresses FAA concerns but also allows for a more efficient use of the site. The processing facility will be approximately 60 feet tall, while other buildings will be around 40 feet. This reimagined plan marks a significant step forward for Chobani's operations in the region, reflecting the company's commitment to growth while adhering to safety regulations.
As the project progresses, the Planning Board will continue to monitor developments, ensuring that all necessary approvals are secured for a successful expansion. The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between local businesses and regulatory bodies in fostering economic growth while maintaining safety standards.
